Erik to get to that next level where you are challenging for the title, how important is it that you have an elite no. 9 who can do all facets of the game?
”I think we need and we have to strengthen the team. So in more positions too and, for example, for the squad depth. But we don’t think about this in this moment and we don’t think about this. It’s only about, so far, I think we have are having great season so keep going, keep improving, keep progressing. The team is doing so well and then it is enjoyable to be a part in this team. So we have to keep that process going. We have great players, a good team, a great year, but is only a success if you keep going.”
Hi Erik, I imagine it has been quite a tough season for Jadon Sancho but, on Sunday, he showed quite a lot of courage to put his hand up and take a penalty and it ended up being quite a big moment, given what has happened to him in the past. Do moments like that change seasons for players? Do you see that moment triggering something in him to make him the player we all saw at Borussia Dortmund possibly?
”Yes, but I think also we have seen in the season many times very good performances from Jadon. I think definitely, that moment on Sunday, it will strengthen him even more and give him, as you say, more courage and more belief. Definitely and I think you have to recognise it and reward it for stepping up on Sunday and it was such a good penalty. It was so convincing and the same you can say for Rashy [Marcus Rashford], it was so convincing. I think they have stepped over the trauma and that’s very good because they have shown they have character and personality. That can help us as, many times, you ask questions about bouncing back in a game, this is the same in a game, show the personality when things are not going in your direction. Make sure you turn it around.”
